Aquatic therapy is, at its core, physical therapy that is performed in the water. At Roberts Physical and Aquatic Therapy, we can provide patients from Connecticut's shoreline communities with an alternative to traditional PT programs.
|
The benefits of utilizing an aquatic therapy program include:
- Buoyancy supports the patient's weight while being treated
- Viscosity provides an excellent source of resistance
- Hydrostatic pressure can decrease swelling
- Warmth of the water helps relax muscles and vessels

Often after an injury or surgery, a patient's sensitivity to pain is increased while weight bearing is limited, which restricts his/her activities on land. In water the effects of gravity are reduced and functional activity and motion can occur. The properties of water allow for a patient to exercise in a relative "low or no impact" environment that provides more comfortable movement and enhanced range of motion. Water supports the body, reduces joint stress and provides resistance and assistance to movement in a truly unique manner. Patients can improve mobility, strength and function rapidly during the healing process. Roberts Physical and Aquatic Therapy is one of the only physical therapy providers in Middlesex County that offers aquatic therapy at its facility.
